CHAPTER 1 :- BASIC INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER

What is computer?

A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data. You probably already know that you can use a computer to type documents, send email, play games, and browse the Web.

A computer contains many electrical, electronic and mechanical components known as hardware :-

·        Input device - keyboard, scanner, mouse
·        Output device  - printer, monitor , headphone
·        Storage device – ROM , RAM
·        System unit – Motherboard
·        Communication device – Wi-Fi , Bluetooth

Green computing :-

Green computing is the environmentally responsible and eco-friendly use of computers and their resources. In broader terms, it is also defined as the study of designing, manufacturing/engineering, using and disposing of computing devices in a way that reduces their environmental impact.

Network :-

A network is defined as a group of two or more computer systems linked together. There are many types of computer networks, including the following:
·        Local-area networks (LANs): The computers are geographically close together (that is, in the same building).
·        Wide-area networks (WANs): The computers are farther apart and are connected by telephone lines or radio waves.
·        Campus-area networks (CANs): The computers are within a limited geographic area, such as a campus or military base.
·        metropolitan-area networks MANs): A data network designed for a town or city.
·        Home-area networks (HANs): A network contained within a user's home that connects a person's digital devices.

Internet :-

The Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers. More than 190 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions.

Is Web and Internet the Same?

The Internet is not synonymous with World Wide Web. The Internet is a massive network of networks, a networking infrastructure. It connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet. The World Wide Web, or simply Web, is a way of accessing information over the medium of the Internet. It is an information-sharing model that is built on top of the Internet.

Computer software :-

Computer software, or simply software, is that part of a computer system that consists of encoded information or computer instructions, in contrast to the physical hardware from which the system is built.

Computer application in society :-
·        Science
·        Publishing
·        Travel
·        Manufacturing

Computer application in society :-
·       Education
·       Finance
·       Government
·       Healthcare

Element of information system :-
·       Hardware
·       Software
·       Data
·       People
·       Procedure

A super computer :-

A super computer is a computer that performs at or near the currently highest operational rate of computers. Example – used for scientific and engineering application that must handle very large database or do great amount of computing.

Embedded Computer :-

An embedded computer is a special purpose computer that function as a component in a large product
